| The
organization was founded by Sherry Catlett and received
its nonprofit status in August 2001. Sherry’s motivation
comes from being a member of musical family. Sidney “Big
Sid” Catlett, one of the best know members of the
Catlett clan, was one of Louis Armstrong’s favorite
percussionist, and was respected by other jazz masters
including Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie
and Charlie Parker.
Another well-known member of the family is Buddy Catlett.
Buddy is a talented bassist and has recorded with
Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins,
Count Basie, Quincy Jones, and many others.
Being around jazz musicians for most of her life,
Sherry saw that there was little to no support for
the health and well being of the artist. With that
in mind Sherry wanted to actively rally the community
to support and give back to jazz artists and show
them appreciation for dedicating their lives to the
preservation and expansion of America’s original
art form.
